On 17-19 June this year, China and Serbia issued a joint statement confirming Serbia’s intent to actively participate in the development of the Silk Road Economic Belt and 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, two initiatives earlier proposed by China. The announcement coincided with a state visit to Serbia by Xi Jinping, the Chinese President. The statement was  in line with an earlier Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two governments with regard to jointly establishing the Belt and Road and confirmed that every effort will be made to ensure both parties can fully capitalise on the opportunities arising from the Initiative. Moreover, both parties agreed to strengthen cooperation in a number of areas, including the construction of energy and transportation infrastructure, production capacity, and agriculture. Every effort will also be made to promote bilateral trade and two-way investment, as well as to advance trade facilitation.
